All manuscripts submitted for publishing should include a statement that studies have been approved by an appropriate ethics committee and conducted in accordance with ethical standards as laid down in:

Authors should indicate in Material and Methods section that they have received written informed consent of human participants.

If the manuscript is a case report that is supposed to reveal any personal data of human participants, it is necessary to obtain written informed consent of the patient for data publication. Identifying details should be excluded. Editors do not collect completed consent forms but encourage authors to familiarize themselves with a Consent Form for Publication of Patient-related Data available on the Journal’s website to ensure that the form, which has been signed by the patient or their legal guardian, contains all the key elements.

We encourage reviewers to pay attention to the ethical aspects of manuscripts and report any potential violations to the editor.

  1. Research involving animals

When animals are used as research subjects, experimental studies have to conform to the following international, national, and institutional guidelines:

According to Rules of Working With Experimental Animals (Annex to the Order of the USSR Ministry of Health No. 755 dated August 12, 1977), authors must indicate in Material and Methods section that the research protocol was approved by an appropriate ethics committee and legal and ethical rules regarding the humane treatment of animals were respected.

V. Formatting

The manuscript should be submitted in Microsoft Word formats (.doc, .docx). The text should be set in Times New Roman font, 14 point in size, 1.5-spaced. Margins must be not less than 2.5 cm from each side of the page. All pages must be numbered.

Original articles should not exceed 20 pages (including figures, tables, the abstract, and references); case reports, 4-5 pages; reviews, 22, and book/media reviews and informative articles, 3 pages.

Original articles should have structured abstracts with the following sections: Background/Importance, Objective, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions. As a rule, the structured abstract contains no more than 200-250 words.

The abstract is followed by keywords (no more than 3-5) reflecting key points of the article and aiding online search and discovery.

Nonsystematic reviews, case reports, case series, and opinion articles should have unstructured abstracts. However, authors should adhere to a narration order, starting with an issue formulation and ending with the means of its solution and results. The unstructured abstract should not exceed 150 words.

Original articles should have the following structure: Introduction (Background), Objective, Methods (Material and Methods), Results, Discussion, Conclusions. In large articles, Results and Discussion sections could have subsections. In reviews and case reports, the text may be structured otherwise.

Contributions of all authors should be listed in the Author Contributions section at the end of the article. Following the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), those designated as authors should meet all of the following 4 criteria:

Persons who made other contributions but do not meet all the 4 criteria for authorship may be listed in the Acknowledgments section, with their permission.

Below is an example of the Author Contributions section:

Author contributions

Concept and design: Ivanov, Snow

Acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of data: Petrova

Drafting and reviewing of the manuscript: All authors

Statistical analysis: Petrova, Snow

To describe author contributions correctly, please refer to our list of potential contributions.

The Acknowledgments section is to gratitude people who have helped in some way in the preparation of the paper, Funding section should include data on all sponsoring bodies.

VI. Statistical analysis

Statistical analysis details and its correctness are the integral component of Material and Methods section. Authors should list all applied statistical methods and all used statistical tests. Such phrases as “Standard statistical methods were used” should be avoided; the applied methods should be described in detail. It is the correct and detailed descriptions of these aspects that confirm the correctness of published research results, making readers trust these results and giving them an opportunity to perform their own research and suggest the use of these aspects in their articles published in the journal.

All authors should be aware of real complexities of technologies they use. In this regard, the detail and correctness of published studies using such technologies should not be limited to only elementary statistical methods. Authors should indicate not only comparisons of mean parameters in groups but also various multivariate statistical methods. For this reason, specialists in statistical analysis could be involved in studies.

Statistical significance (Р value) accepted in research should be specified. For example, it could be stated as follows: The significance level was set at 0.05. The Р value should be specified in each case (eg, not simply P < .05 or P > .05 but P = .015 or P = .271).

Authors should specify actual values of statistical criteria (eg, χ2 = 12.3 [df = 2, Р = .0001]). All statistical terms, abbreviations, and statistical symbols should be defined (eg, M, sample mean; m (SEM), standard error of the mean; SE, standard error; SD, standard deviation).

When using such expressions as M ± m, the value of each symbol and sample size (n) should be specified. When using such parameters as M ± m, authors should mention that data is normally distributed and compare means of groups. For data that do not have a normal distribution, the median and 25% and 75% interquartile ranges should be displayed instead of M ± m, and there is no need in comparing means of groups.

If used statistical criteria have restrictions for their application, ways how these restrictions have been checked and outcomes of these checks should be specified (eg, when using parametric method, the ways of confirming the normality of selection distribution should be specified).

Avoid the nonspecific use of terms with several meanings (eg, there are several variants of the correlation coefficient: Pearson, Spearmen, etc).

If data analysis was performed using a statistical software, its name and version should be specified.

VII. Figures and tables

Color line drawings are submitted in TIFF format; images should have a resolution of 300 dpi. LZW or other compression may be used. Graphs, charts, diagrams can be placed in the article’s body, while illustrations or photographs should be sent as separate files. All figures must be of high quality, have a title and caption. Abbreviations in figures should be defined in the caption. Text on the figures should be distinct.

The word “Table” and the table number should be placed above the table title on the right side of the page. Numbers in tables should correspond to those in the text and be statistically processed. Tables should be placed in the text without putting them on separate pages.

Number all figures and tables consecutively. Tables and figures should be mentioned in the text. Titles of figures and tables should be given both in Russian and English.

Examples:

Table 3

Postoperative complications

Таблица 3

Послеоперационные осложнения

Figure 1. Study design

Рисунок 1. Дизайн исследования

VIII. Abbreviations

Avoid abbreviations in the title, subtitles, and the abstract of the manuscript. Use only standard abbreviations in order not to confuse readers. Abbreviations should be enclosed in parentheses immediately after first mention of the term, which is spelled out in full (unless the abbreviation does not require expansion). Only use abbreviations for terms used at least 3 times in the manuscript. Abbreviations used in tables or figures should be expanded in alphabetical order in a footnote under a table or figure.

IX. References

Depending on the article type, we recommend citing no more than 30 sources (original articles), no more than 50 sources (systematic or literary review), or up to 15 sources (case report).

The reference list should contain, besides fundamental works, publications from the last 5 years, mainly journal articles.

References should be numbered consecutively with arabic numerals in the order in which they are cited in the text. reference appears on a new line.

For manuscripts in English: Each reference should be cited in the manuscript by means superscript arabic numerals. Use arabic superscript numerals outside periods and commas but inside colons and semicolons. When more than 2 references are cited together, use hyphens to join the first and last numbers of a closed series; use commas without space to separate other parts of a multiple citation.

Example:

secondary immunosuppression.1,8                             metabolic syndrome.37-39

For manuscripts in Russian: A reference number (arabic numerals) should be enclosed in square brackets. When more than 2 references are cited together, use an en dash to join the first and last numbers of a closed series; use commas with space to separate other parts of a multiple citation.

Example:

аневризмы [18, 19].        продуцируемых микроорганизмами [16–18].

All references are verified using the Russian Science Citation Index, Russian State Library, PubMed, and Crossref systems. Significant errors in the source description or the quoted fragment and duplication of sources in the reference list are not allowed. All sources in the reference list should be cited in the article; otherwise they will be deleted while editing.

Authors are responsible for checking that the reference list does not contain retracted articles without acknowledging the retraction in the citation. For Russian-language articles eLIBRARY and Association of Science Editors and Publishers Retracted Articles Database are considered authoritative sources for information on retractions. As for articles in other languages (especially English), authors can identify retracted publications in PubMed.

Innovative Medicine of Kuban follows the AMA version of the Vancouver style (American Medical Association Manual of Style), which is also based on recommendations described in https://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html and https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK7256/pdf/Bookshelf_NBK7256.pdf.

Russian-language references should consist of 2 parts: Russian and English. Both parts should follow the AMA version of the Vancouver style.

Examples of References

  1. Articles

Do not shorten article titles or abbreviate names of Russian-language journals unless their abbreviated names appear in the NLM Catalog database.

Names of journals (primarily in English) should be abbreviated according to the listing in the NLM Catalog database. Expand journal names if they are not cited in PubMed to avoid possible confusion.

If a cited source has identifiers, such as PMID (PubMed identification number), PMCID (PubMed Central identification number), and/or DOI (digital object identifier), such identifiers should be indicated at the end of the reference in the appropriate order.

Example:

Gordon JB, Ganz P, Nabel EG, et al. Atherosclerosis influences the vasomotor response of epicardial coronary arteries to exercise. J Clin Invest. 1989;83(6):1946–1952. PMID: 2723067. PMCID: PMC303917. https://doi.org/10.1172/JCI114103

Check whether a publication has the DOI at http://search.crossref.org/, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/, and https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/. Editors will check whether identifier of each source are current and authentic.

Authors of cited sources in the reference list should be presented in the same order as in the source. The names of all authors should be given unless there are more than 6, in which case the names of the first 3 authors are used followed by “et al.”

Examples:

Russ G, Bonnema SJ, Erdogan MF, Durante C, Ngu R, Leenhardt L. European Thyroid Association guidelines for ultrasound malignancy risk stratification of thyroid nodules in adults: the EU-TIRADS. Eur Thyroid J. 2017;6(5):225–237. PMID: 29167761. PMCID: PMC5652895. https://doi.org/10.1159/000478927

  1. Books and book chapters

According to the AMA Manual of Style (11th ed, March 2020), it is no longer needed to indicate the publisher’s location (city) because many publishers have more than 1 location, and location can be difficult to determine if looking at an online resource (eg, an ebook).
